I had to call off work yesterday. I rarely do that anymore but sometimes there are things that occur that make you have to stay home.  It was a good day to call off. The temperature outside was in the 20’s. Windchill made it even colder. Waiting for buses in that type of weather is no fun.  So the decision to call off was an easy one, but that doesn’t relieve my guilt. At first, I was excited to have the whole day to get stuff done, but then…I laid down on the couch, TV on, and that’s where I stayed. ALL DAY. I felt worse after laying there all day.  I forgot about writing something for this blog post.  I didn’t write, I didn’t clean, I didn’t get anything done. My day of joy over having the day off was replaced with the guilt of a wasted day.

And then I remembered, I wrote about this very thing in one of the “Back to Being” books.  The day I wrote this, I felt particularly down. I felt like there was nothing else to write about. I know it’s kinda laughable to think there are no more questions for the Universe…but I can get like this!  Here it is:

What else can we possibly write about without sounding like a broken record?

There is much more to write about.  Such as the purpose, yes the purpose of down days.  Sleepy, grey, in your PJs, in front of the TV days.  Too many, including yourself, tend to think there is something wrong with you when you have “days” like this.  To the contrary, these days are to be cherished.  The world is on high octane these days.  The pace of the world of having information at your fingertips with the touch of a button, instant results and simultaneous screens in front of your face. Not to forget the emotional rollercoaster of these times and the time to come. Your body, your mind, and your psyche need downtime. So, live in the moment, in your PJs, with your foot massager and cup of tea.  Do not think for a nanosecond that you “should be” doing something.  When you are “being” you accept the days, and the moments, as they come.  You live in the moment. You happily take a couch potato day because you know or you don’t know what the next moment brings.  The next moment(s) may be filled with activities and then you will be grateful to have had your rest.

So, you’re thinking, when is it too much downtime?  Too many PJ days?  In a state of “being” you would naturally, without thinking, move on to the next moment and participate in what the next moment brings. When you are not in a state of being you are rebelling against what you have to do.  “Being” never feels cumbersome or like drudgery.  “Doing” feels like that.  Too many days on the couch means you’re not allowing.  You are blocking.  You are suppressing. Most probably ruminating over everything and everything. We guarantee once you let it go, you will get up.  You will naturally move on to the next moment and the next moment will be exactly where you need to be. Free-to-be means the freedom to allow yourself to live the life you are meant to live.  Quit fighting yourself.  By being a Being of doers, which you have been for a millennia, you have been at war with your natural state of being.  Your natural, God-given (designed) state is one of Being in the flow of the Universe.  Being in the flow does not mean you will be engaging in productive (your terms) behaviors every moment.  It means you are free to allow yourself a day to do nothing, a week to do nothing.  To sleep, to read, to watch a movie.  These types of days are productive.  They are giving you, allowing you to have a much-needed rest from the world.  Relish them, cherish them, and then tomorrow – see what tomorrow brings.

xoxo
